Looking for a high adventure backpacking experience in the Arctic Wilderness? Check out Sarek National Park in Northern Sweden with its rugged mountains, glacial carved valleys and wild, icy rivers. Sarek is known as Europe's last wilderness and it does not disappoint. Sarek offers backpackers a remote, pristine Arctic wilderness full of 2000 meter peaks, glaciers, alpine lakes and wide river valleys. There are no trails or shelters so adequate planning and backcountry skills are essential.
Claes Grundsten has been trekking Sarek and the surrounding areas for more than 35 years. He's published a fantastic book of his photos called, "Sarek and Kebnekaise: where the light is ever-changing". Claes has some amazing photos and reading his accompanying essay will help you to get familiar with the region. Claes also has written the only detailed guidebook of the area entitled "Sarek". Unfortunately, it's only available in Swedish but offers a wealth of information on the various valleys and mountain regions within Sarek and gives critical ratings of time, distance and difficulty for most of the main backpacking routes. The other essential resource is the BD10 Mapfor Sarek which is available from Maps Worldwide. Don't leave home without it!
