I've been a fan of Paul Marcellini's work for some time now and have also been really eager to return to South Florida and photograph for a long time. So, I was very excited to see Paul release a PDF e-Book on photographing the Everglades. I think if you have limited amounts to time to travel to a location that you don't know well, it's great to rely on some local knowledge to help prepare and plan your trip. Paul does a great job of organizing the information and I definitely recommend this e-Book to anyone thinking of traveling there to photograph the amazing landscape and wildlife.
What I like that Paul does in the e-Book is to break the region down into sections along with maps and photographs from each area. It's also very helpful to see how dramatically the landscape changes from the wet season to the dry season. So timing is a definite consideration and the e-Book helps you explore the landscape at different times of year. Certainly the Everglades are a unique collection of ecosystems and it's helpful to know how to access these places with watercraft or hiking and it's very helpful to know the special gear considerations if you don't photograph in these kind of places very often.
And of course there are safety considerations which include the weather and animals to be aware of including just a few snakes and some alligators...Paul even includes information on camping and lodging options.
I think overall there is some rich detail in the book that comes from photographing a location over many years and I think this is one of the best aspects of the book.
The official title is The Ultimate Guide to Everglades Photography and I would have to agree. So my bags are packed and I'm ready to go, see you in the Everglades!
