One of the areas we were really hoping to experience was the wild geothermal area of Hveravellir. The challenge is getting to Hveravellir in tact since it's accessed by the 4WD only road called Kjölur. The interior road had only opened up a few days before we arrived and so we weren't sure how much snow would be left behind. As it turned out the road was actually in good condition because it hadn't been driven on much. So, we made the drive up to Hveravellir and what a place it turned out to be. Tons of great hiking in the area with a really nice geothermal pool to soak in after a long journey. We soaked a couple of hours at least. But we came to photograph the geothermal area and the sunset/sunrise light turned out to be a real show. Easily one of the highlights of the trip. The deep, opaque blue of the Blahver geothermal pool is otherworldly. This was the setting as the skies began to light up with that deep pink and magenta. Just incredible colors and textures all around. Not a morning you soon forget.
